About Durham Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Durham Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers approximately 27 miles of coastline along the northeastern edge of England, between the mouth of the River Tees and the River Tyne. This protected area is characterized by dramatic magnesian limestone cliffs, sandy beaches, and coastal habitats including heathlands, dunes, and saltmarshes. Geologically significant, the cliffs reveal important fossil records extending back hundreds of millions of years. The area supports a wide range of wildlife, including several rare and protected species such as the natterjack toad, great crested newt, and diverse seabird colonies including puffins and guillemots. The coastline is also rich in cultural history, with sites like the medieval Dunstanburgh Castle ruins and the fishing villages of Crimdon and Seaham, offering glimpses into the area's maritime and industrial past. Visitors can enjoy varied outdoor activities including walking along national and local coastal trails, birdwatching, mountain biking on regional routes, and geological exploration. The Durham Coast Path is a nationally recognized long-distance footpath that runs through the AONB, revealing breathtaking sea views and natural features. The area appeals to those interested in nature conservation, geology, history, and quiet, scenic recreation away from busier tourist hubs. Several nature reserves and country parks within the AONB provide accessible points for family-friendly outdoor experiences, enhancing its appeal year-round.
